INEOS Grenadiers
Strengths:
Geraint Thomas is a Welsh professional cyclist who currently races for the Ineos Grenadiers team. Thomas is a former Tour de France winner and two-time Olympic track champion in the team pursuit. He is also a three-time world champion on the track.
Thomas began his professional road career on the Barloworld team in 2007 and made his Tour de France debut that year. He finished 140th out of 141 finishers when the race concluded in Paris. During the first few years of his career, Thomas dovetailed his racing programme with his track aspirations and in 2010 he moved from Barloworld to Sky Procycling - Britain’s first men’s WorldTour team.
Thomas continued to progress in a number of areas, winning shorter stage races, competing in the cobbles Classics and becoming something of a super domestique for riders like Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.
Thomas helped Froome win all four of his Tour de France titles in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 - although he crashed out of the 2017 edition. During that phase of Thomas’s career, the Welshman developed into a formidable stage racer with two top-15 finishes in the Tour de France and titles in Paris-Nice, the Volta ao Algarve and the Tour of the Alps.
Thomas would head into the 2018 edition of the Tour de France as the co-leader of Team Sky alongside Froome but it was the Welshman who had the stronger legs with back-to-back stage wins in the Alps, including a memorable victory atop Alpe d’Huez. Thomas would take the yellow jersey on stage 11 of the race and never look back, eventually beating Tom Dumoulin and Froome to the top step of the podium to become the first Welsh winner of cycling’s biggest race. Thomas returned to defend his Tour de France title but would finish second to teammate Egan Bernal.
Crashes would disrupt Thomas’ Grand Tour hopes in 2020 and 2021 but in 2022 he rolled back the years to finish third at the Tour de France behind Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar. Thomas has also won the Tour de Suisse, Criterium du Dauphiné, Tour of Romandie and E3 Harelbeke.
The Welshman's main objective for 2023 was the Giro d'Italia, after his two prior participations were curtailed by misfortune. Thomas came within a stage of going home with the pink jersey from Italy, but his dreams were dashed by Primož Roglič in the penultimate day time trial.
Geraint Thomas has a contract with the Ineos Grenadiers through to the end of 2025, expected to be the last contract of his career.
