Power meter brand 4iiii has released its new PRECISION 3+ power meter, featuring Apple’s 'Find My' technology. Much like Apple’s Airtag trackers, the new device leverages other iPhones to allow any 4iiii owner to check up on their bike’s location from their iPhone.

Whether this new tracking feature will increase the chance of your bike being recovered from theft is unclear – as anyone who’s used an Airtag will know, after a few hours, the devices send a notification to the iPhone they’ve been tethering their location from, saying that they’re being tracked.

The use-value of the update is questionable, but the motivation for cramming in more tech is best explained by Phil White, President and CEO of 4iiii. “We wanted to do more than just release another power meter," he said. "With the addition of Find My integration and seamless use with Apple devices, the PRECISION 3+ really shows where we can go with this technology as bikes (and their users) get smarter and more connected."

It’s plain to see that the brand is going all-in on Apple integrations. In addition to Find My technology in its latest device, 4iiii have released an app for the Apple Watch that works with all 4iiii devices, capitalising on the new cycling-focused features of the Apple Watch. Now, 4iiii power meters can be used without the need for a traditional head unit.

A further update in the PRECISION 3+ is something 4iiii are calling “real-time terrain auto-optimizing” – the device switches between using an accelerometer when riding steadily on smooth roads to a gyroscope for rough terrain, gravel or high-rpm sprints. This, says 4iiii, is to “guarantee optimal performance and unwavering accuracy across any riding surface".

Ultimately, this new device is very similar to its predecessor. It has the same accuracy and battery life claims, and it’s the same shape and size. In fact, owners of 4iiii PRECISION 3 power meters can even send their devices in to be upgraded for $29.99.

The 4iiii PRECISION 3+ is available now, and the brand states that a double-sided version will be available in the near future.
